LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

Lectors. The proclamation of the Word of God at Mass is central to our celebration. When the Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people. Those who serve as readers must be clear, understandable and knowledgeable about the scripture being read. Lectors are people who have a love for scripture. Those interested in this ministry should contact Sue Niemi at susan.niemi@marquette.edu or 414-446-8358.

Eucharistic Ministers. Eucharistic ministers, or extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, assist in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. As ministers of Holy Communion, one is also called to be especially observant of Jesus’ command to love one’s neighbor in day to day living. Those who serve in this ministry need to be fully initiated members of the Church; that is, they must have received the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. Those interested in this ministry should contact Sue Niemi at susan.niemi@marquette.edu or 414-446-8358.

Ushers.
Ushers, or Ministers of Hospitality, have a special role of welcoming those who enter the church. They enhance our worship by welcoming people, seating them, taking up the collection, assisting anyone who may become ill, and distributing parish bulletins. Their hospitality is centered in the hospitality of Christ since we all come as invited guests of Christ himself. Thus, ushers need to be welcoming, friendly people. If you are interested in becoming one of our ushers, contact Jim Stout in the parish office at 414-365-2020, ext. 16.

Servers. Servers assist the priest during Mass and may also carry the cross, the candles, and the thurible. They also help in the preparations before Mass. By its nature, this is a ministry that supports or assists other ministries. A good server knows the flow and movement of the liturgy well enough to anticipate the needs of the priest or other ministers. This is a ministry that is open to both children and adults. Those interested in this ministry should contact Jim Stout in the parish office at 414-365-2020, ext. 16.

Music assists those who come to worship to express and share our gift of faith. Music is a needed dimension of our worship every time we gather. All those involved in music ministry, whether as a cantor, choir member or instrumentalist, are present at liturgy to support the assembly in song. If you have a special gift for music, contact our Director of Liturgy and Music, Jim Stout at 414-365-2020, ext. 16.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION MINISTRIES

Christian Formation Committee Member

This committee helps the parish develop an understanding of its responsibility for the educational mission of the church to all the youth and adults of the parish and makes recommendations to the council regarding all aspects of the mission. This includes such areas as providing direction for the total education of children in the parish school and religious education programs, youth ministry, and formation opportunities for adults.

Catechists and Classroom Aides

Catechists serve in a very important ministry. Next to the parents of our children, they are given the task of promoting knowledge of the faith. They help our children encounter Christ at a level appropriate for them to grasp, through teaching knowledge of the traditions and scripture of the Catholic Church. Catechists and their aides live their faith and show by example how to be true Disciples of Christ. This ministry is open to all adults of the parish. Experience is helpful but not necessary. We will guide, educate and support you in your endeavor. In addition, because this is a ministry in which one works with children, the completion of a short sexual abuse awareness training session on protecting God’s children is required by the Archdiocese within 90 days of your beginning date of volunteering.

Grade School Catechists/Aides      (High school students are welcome to serve as aides.)

For all outings as a group, a chaperone is a must. Chaperones are briefed before the event takes place. Like catechists and aides, chaperones need to attend sexual abuse awareness training as required by the Archdiocese.

R.C.I.A. Sponsors and Sponsor Families

Sponsors are friends, companions and guides for these individuals. In the case of children being received into the church, sponsor families with children are paired with those preparing.

Time Commitment: We ask that sponsors attend Mass and sessions with their candidates as often as possible. There are also several Sundays when rites take place at Mass and a celebration at the Cathedral on the first Sunday of Lent for which the sponsors need to be present.
